Creating a Word Search Manually

This guide explains how to manually create word search puzzles in Crossword Studio by designing the grid and adding words.

Initial Setup

Begin by configuring your puzzle through the manual start window:

  1. Puzzle name - Give your puzzle a title
  2. Puzzle type - Select "Word Search"
  3. Language - Choose your language (must be enabled in macOS Settings > General > Language & Region)
  4. Grid dimensions - Set the width and height
  5. Grid fill option - Choose how to start

Grid Fill Options

Choose one of two approaches:

  1. Empty grid - Start with an empty grid filled with blackened cells
  2. Custom shape - Create a non-square shape

Word Placement

Create placements in the grid, then use the keyboard to fill in the word search cells with letters.

Word Placement

Word Bank (Critical)

Adding words to the word bank is critical because placements alone are ambiguous—words can extend in multiple directions and beyond intended boundaries. The word bank clarifies which words should be found.

Publishing

When all cells contain a letter, the Publish button will enable. Click it to open the publish window and proceed to the Publishing stage.
